Accept referrals where criteria has been met

Prior to making a referral to AES schools will have contacted parents or carers to highlight attendance concerns.  If concerns persist further contact should be made and parents invited into school to meet and discuss the matter with school staff. If appropriate school will request medical evidence to support absence attributed to illness. A detailed record should be kept of all contact and attempted contact with parents.  If there is no improvement and there are 10 sessions unauthorised absence in a 6 week period a referral should be made to AES.

If a student has 20 consecutive sessions unauthorised absence and attempts to contact parents or carers has been unsuccessful a referral may be made to AES.

AES will also accept referrals for students with authorised absence where the school has concerns about the student’s welfare.
